Carlos Conde

CARLOS CONDE-GONZÁLEZ (San Juan, Puerto Rico), acclaimed by the press as “a performer of great intelligence, versatility and warmth”, (Doctor Musical Arts, State University of New York at Stony Brook, Artist Diploma, Juilliard), is an actor and musician with a thirtyfive-year career as a performer of the operatic genre. Along with luminaries such as Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo, Carlos Conde has performed across the globe, including the New Israeli Opera, the Arriaga Theater in Bilbao (Spain), Oper der Stadt Bonn (Germany), Teatro Comunale di Brescia (Italy), as well as opera companies in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. Appearances in the United States include major roles with the New York City National Opera, Lyric Opera of San Antonio, Connecticut Grand Opera, Teatro Lirico d’Europa, the Mozart Opera Festival, and the opera companies of Omaha, Birmingham, Toledo, Forth Worth, Williamsburg, Shreveport, Augusta, and his native Puerto Rico. Conde is widely recognized for his interpretations of Italian roles, most notably Leporello in DON GIOVANNI, Don Magnifico in LA CENERENTOLA, Dulcamara in L’ELISIR D’AMORE, Figaro in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Melitone in LA FORZA DEL DESTINO, and Bartolo in IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA. The latter is a role that has sung more than 400 times in 32 different productions. Equally in command of his technique on the concert stage, Conde made his debut at Carnegie Hall with the New York Opera Orchestra in his productions of La Gioconda and La fanciulla del West. He made his acclaimed debut with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Sir Colin Davis in the role of Somarone in Béatrice et Benedict at Lincoln Center, and has performed recitals in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. Since 2004, Dr Conde has staged-directed in Italy, Tel-Aviv, Canada, New York, Virginia, Houston and Puerto Rico. Some of his memorable, and critically acclaimed, productions are: Rossini’s LA CENERENTOLA and IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA; Mozart’s LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, COSI FAN TUTTE and DON GIOVANNI; Donizetti’s L’ELISIR D’AMORE, and LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR; Bellini’s I CAPULETTI E I MONTECCHI; Puccini’s LA BOHEME and LA RONDINE; Verdi’s LA TRAVIATA; Mascagni’s L’AMICO FRITZ; and Menotti’s THE MEDIUM. Prof. Conde is widely known as a professor of vocal pedagogy with an emphasis on Neuro-Singing and the Old Italian School of Singing. His career as an educator has taken him through academic platforms in England (Guildhall School of Music and the Jette Parker Apprentice Programme at the Royal Opera Covent Garden), Switzerland (Basel Opera Studio), Sri Lanka (Barbara Segal Opera Academy), Israel (Tel Aviv University and the Israel Vocal Arts Institute), Malta (University of Malta), and in the United States: Juilliard, Mannes, Texas Tech, Miami University, Rutgers and the City University of New York. His prestigious awards include winning the José Moscoso Award in the competition of the Sullivan Foundation Competition; First Prize at the Palm Beach Opera Competition; and the first place of District, first regional place and national finalist in the Auditions of the Metropolitan Opera. As an evaluator in university accreditation, Dr. Conde is a consultant for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in the United States (MSCHE), institution with whom in 2018 he co-led the national accreditation processes of the Manhattan School of Music in New York and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. At present: Dr Conde is the director of CC-PerformingArts, an artistic and vocal consulting agency with presence in Australia, South Africa, Japan, Sri Lanka, Austria, Italy, Germany, England, Mexico and the United States.
